"Wow where did this performance come from?"

The Daily Phil Esposito (1/2/11)

There were 11 former feather heads on the ice last night. Nine of which were skaters who amassed seven points. Six of those were by teammates who decided to suddenly emerge and combine for three goals and three assists. Also a drunk goalie played well but his offense screwed him again, and the defending Stanley Cup Champion Goalie stood on his head. I have included a little more after each guy in this segment since there were some interesting facts. Hope you enjoy!

Tuomo Ruutu – Carolina
16:35 TOI, one goal (9), three assists (17,18,19), plus three, two shots
This guy has come out of no where in the past four games scoring 8 points over that stretch with two goals and six assists. This was his second game with three or more points of this season.

Sergei Samsonov – Carolina
18:38 TOI, two goals (7,8), minus two, three shots
Kind of bad that he scored two goals and his team had a total of six, but his plus/minus rating was minus two. Just a side note, Marty Brodeur has a record of 5-18-1, that is terrible, and to think he has 3 shutouts… He is supposed to be a future hall of Fame goaltender. By the way he faced 7 shots tonight and only stopped 4 in relief of Johan Hedberg.

Craig Adams – Pittsburgh
8:13 TOI, 0 for 2 on face-offs
Very low time on ice for him in this game. The game itself I thought was very entertaining. Crosby was held off the board for the second straight game, Ovechkin didn’t record a real point either (did score a goal that was waived off). It was nice to see someone not in the spot light step up like Eric Fehr did in this game. Good for him.

Shawn Thornton – Boston
10:26 TOI, plus two, one shot
The Bruins lost 7-6 on a shootout to the Buffalo Sabres. I think it is amazing that Thornton didn’t even have one point but he was plus two.

Kris Versteeg – Toronto
17:30 TOI, one assist (15), plus on, two shots, 2 of 3 on face-offs
Has a quiet nine points in his last nine games. Good job kid.

Tim Brent – Toronto
12:46 TOI, 8 of 14 on face-offs
I got nothing for him…

Rene Bourque – Calgary
18:01 TOI, 3 shots
Only one point in his last 6, with a minus 4 rating during that stretch.

Colin Fraser – Edmonton
11:51 TOI, 6 of 8 on face-offs
He hasn’t recorded a point since November 12th against the Devils when he scored two goals which is too many games ago for me to count. Fraser has a total of three points this season in 37 games. Eeek.

Nikolai Khabibulin – Edmonton
Loss (15), 28 saves on 30 shots, .933 SV%
He has now lost 4 straight games only allowing 10 goals total, with a .919 SV% in those games. His offense isn’t helping him out… 15-23-4 as a member of the Oilers.

Antti Niemi – San Jose
Win (9), shutout (2), 29 saves on 29 shots
Won the game 1-0 and has now won two games in a row for the first time this season. Coach McLellan must be so proud…
