The punchline is that idiot in the blue shirt Brendan Shanahan. If there is one the first week of the playoffs have proven, without a shadow of doubt, is that Shanahan is not the right man for this job. He has completely failed by making the most inconsistent rulings I have ever seen. Andrew Shaw will sit for the next 3 games for his hit on goalie Mike Smith. Not only is the suspension much more severe than others handed out for worse offenses, but why did he wait until 6 hours before puck drop to announce it? Is the NHL, who owns the Coyotes, trying to squeeze every dime out of them before they ship them to Quebec with a few more playoff wins?
How does Shaw get 3 games and Shea Weber gets just a $2500 fine for ramming the head of Henrik Zetterberg into the glass? Repeat offender Matt Carkner only got one game for his brutal assault on the Ranger’s Brian Boyle. If Carkner would have pulled that stunt on the streets he’d be sitting in a cell waiting for arraignment. What about Milan Lucic receiving no suspension or fine for taking out Buffalo’s Ryan Miller. Lucic’s hit was far worse than Shaw’s. Part of the reasoning for Shaw’s suspension was that he made no effort to avoid contact. Lucic made no effort either, in fact he extends his arms during the hit. Again, no suspension and no fine, just a 2 minute charging minor.
The NHL needs to replace Shanahan and retrain all of its officials this offseason. The call on the ice was blown and the call from Shanahan was even worse. This guy has no clue what he is doing and is in way over his head. I am shocked he wasn’t wearing his Red Wings jersey when he made the Shaw announcement. I can’t wait to see what he dishes out for all the crap that happened in Philadelphia on Sunday. I’m sure it will be an absolute joke, just like Mr. Shanahan.
Quick notes on Game 3:
After all of this excitement the Blackhawks and Coyotes still have to play Game 3 tonight in front of a sellout crowd at the Madhouse. Mike Smith is a game time decision all of sudden, but now that they got their Shaw suspension I am sure he will be just fine. Jason Labarbera will get the start if Smith can’t go. Martin Hazal is also a game time decision and Lauri Korpikoski is out which leaves the Yotes with just two players with girl’s names. Look for Michael Frolik to take Shaw’s spot in the lineup for the Hawks and possibly Dylan Olsen replacing Sami Lepisto on the blue line.
