Steve Montador was a victim of his own contract. A lot of lofty expectations came with his big 4 year contract, expectations he did not live up to in year one. He spent most of the season having to cover for Sean O’Donnell and John Scott, which will make anyone look worse than they are. We were told that Montador can contribute on the offensive side and we saw brief flashes of that. His 8.8 shooting percentage was best among defenseman, but his 57 shots ranked 6th on the blue line. Coach Q even used Montador as a forward on the power play, and it worked for a short time as he scored 2 power play goals. That was one more than Duncan Keith who is supposed to be a threat on the PP. Montador was not afraid to get physical and would drop the gloves if need be. A concussion caused him to missed 24 out of the last 25 games and the entire playoff run. Montador’s role may expand next year depending on if Stan Bowman trades Niklas Hjalmarsson and resigns Johnny Oduya. Montador is a solid 5th defenseman but he is getting paid like a 2nd pairing one. He will need to bring a bit more to the table next season.
