As we approach the start of free agency tomorrow I am a bit worried about two names that keep coming up at potential targets for the Blackhawks. There have been a lot of tweets, blogs and articles written about the Hawks bringing in Shane Doan and Martin Brodeur. Why? Those would be moves that Bob Pulford and Bill Wirtz would have made back in the 90’s. It would be just like bringing in the likes of Paul Coffey or Wendell Clark years after they passed their primes. Back then it was easy to figure out why they made those moves. The Hawks needed name recognition to sell tickets. When you are trotting out the likes of Chad Kilger, Jean-Yves Leroux and Josef Marha every night you needed to bring a guy like Dave Manson back even though he had nothing left in the tank. These Blackhawks don’t need players who used be good but now are just a name on the back of a jersey. They don’t need any marketing schemes to get butts in the seats. The Hawks have a roster full of big names like Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith. This team doesn’t need a 40 year old Brodeur or a Shane Doan whose best years are past. Make a move that actually helps this team get back to the glory it had just two short years ago. Go get some talented players that that can help you win not a name that helps you sell merchandise. Do not make the “Dollar Bill” move, this organization has moved past those dark days. Bringing in Brodeur or Doan erases all the progress this franchise has made in the last 5 years. This team and its loyal fans deserve better than that!
