Happy Anniversary!!

One month ago today the NHL locked out it’s players for the fourth time in 20 years.  Now, on the eve of the first negotiation in over a month that is focused only on economic issues which by the way is really the only topic worth talking about and separating both sides in this current lockout, there is a leaked article about  NHL focus groups that were created by the owners.

Apparently Luntz Global one of the premier research groups in the country was hired by the NHL for an emergency NHL focus groups.  So after all the talk from fans it turns out that the NHL does care about what the fans think?  To quote Lee Corso on any Saturday on the college preview show-”Not so fast my friend!”

Of course any company that is worth a hill of beans is doing research and market research on its customers.  The fans of course are the #1 customer and the main ingredient in the 3.3 billion dollar pie that both the NHL and NHLPA are fighting over in the court of public opinion during the latest and most pointless lockout to date.  As stated before I understand both sides argument, but I don’t understand why they are not at the table working out their differences instead of letting days go by without talking.  This new revelation of emergency focus group isn’t shocking nor do I feel it will change the course of this lockout, all it shows is that the owners are aware of the court of public opinion and they are just hoping to be able to appoint their own jury instead of having their fates decided by strangers.

What have we learned in the past month?  Not much except that both sides are greedy and unwilling to budge on their demands.  Is today’s revelation going to be a crack in the armor or just a minor footnote? The owners probably are putting together a new focus group to answer questions on what to do if there is a leak of a focus group?!?

Hopefully this doesn’t stop or distract the talks tomorrow in Toronto tomorrow! Time will tell, but maybe tomorrow we can focus group on something else?!?

END THE LOCKOUT!!!
