Now We Are Talking!!

After a month of little movement and negotiations, the NHL owner and commissioner threw a curve ball today by bringing a big boy CBA offer to the NHLPA.  This is almost breaking news that Bettman and Donald Fehr did more than talk about Non-economic core items which sounds like a boring lecture by a college Economics teacher not sure if it would be macro or micro. Anyways, the NHL offered a long term deal believed to be 6 years in length with options with a 50-50 split in revenue or the 3.3 Billion dollar pie that has already shrunk $250 million.

So what changed the status quo and brought upon this new sense of urgency by the owners.  The explanation from Bettman is that they want the puck dropped by Novermber 2 so that a full slate of 82 games could be concluded before a normal playoff package. With over 3 weeks missed all teams would only have to play 5 games in a week once a month to get caught up, and this for both player safety, competitive balance, and to get the Stanley Cup playoffs done by the end of June.

The conspiracy theorist believe that the status quo was changed by NBC Sports.  They can’t possibly be happy stuck playing  re-runs of swimming or bull riding or whatever the station that is formerly know as Versus puts on it’s programming. Yes they don’t have a lot of sports so them starting to miss regular season hockey is a pretty big deal for the network. Either way it’s about time the networks put some pressure on these negotiations just to get the ball rolling or puck dropped!

The Union took the proposal and went back to read it through and Bettman stated that they are “On Call” at all times!  If you want to watch Bettmans post proposal interview click here.  Bettman said he wouldn’t negotiate at the podium and then seem to anyway! Bettman and the owners want the puck dropped November 2 which I’m all for! It’s about time something from inside or outside changed the course of this CBA!  Hopefully like Bettman said they have this signed, sealed, and delivered in the next 10 days.

The Ball is in Fehr and the NHLPA court…Let’s see what they do with it!!

End the Lockout!!
