Esposito is the only Chicago Blackhawk to wear #35 and it now hangs in the rafters of the United Center as one of 6 retired numbers in Chicago Blackhawk history. Esposito is the Blackhawks all-time leader in wins with 418 in losses 302 and ties with 147. The stat that probably will never be broken in franchise history is 74 which is Esposito’s career total shut outs. He also has the season high of 15 shutouts in his first season with the Blackhawks in 1969-1970.
Esposito’s only career down fall was losing Game 7’s in the Stanley Cup Finals in 1971 and 1973. As great as a regular season record #35 had he was only 45-53 in the playoffs in 99 games without being able to hoist the Stanley Cup.
Esposito won the Vezina Trophy 3 times and he was a 6 time all-star.
Tony O’s #35 was retired on November 20, 1988.
On March 19, 2008 The Blackhawks had Tony Esposito night while naming him an official Blackhawks ambassador. In almost a perfect honor of Esposito, Nikolai Khabibulin shut out the Washington Capitals 5-0!
Only 35 days until Stanley Cup Banner #5 heads up to the United Center rafters and becomes a neighbor of the already hanging #35 banner!
