Preseason game #2 is in the books and the final tally states Pittsburgh Penguins-4 Chicago Blackhawks-3 in OT. Here are some quick takes on tonight’s action
-Teuvo Teravainen is pretty special and it’s a shame he’s not playing at least in Rockford this season. Teravainen is scheduled to leave for Finland on Friday. He made a lot of plays and was very effective. The crowd even got to see him shoot second during the shootout that was pretty to watch even if he came away without a goal. Barring injury there is a very good chance he’s on the roster next October if not in April when his club season is over.
– Ben Smith continues his strong camp and preseason with a short-handed goal and an assist. One of the spots that are open is the Michael Frolik penalty kill spot, and Smith earned himself some serious consideration with his shorty tonight.
-Brandon Bollig getting one in the net is an encouraging sign that maybe he can have some offensive punch on the bottom line this season.
-Drew LeBlanc picked up another assist on the Patrick Sharp goal, and he was given the third and final shot during the shootout. LeBlanc has to be the biggest beneficiary of the Brandon Pirri injury.
-Nikolai Khabibulin may have given up 3 goals, but he stopped at least 3 breakaways including one by Sidney Crosby. Khabibulin may not start a lot of games, but if he brings this kind of effort the back up goalie spot for the Blackhawks is in good shape.
-The powerplay which is always a source of material is now 0-12 to kick off the preseason. The endless amount of midseason powerplay jokes on Twitter is already out of control. We all know the Hawks can win a Stanley Cup without a powerplay, but with the talent level why can’t we just score some man advantage goals?
-The best news out of the post game comments is that Jonathan Toews is planning on taking the trip to D.C. and playing tomorrow night against the Washington Capitals.
-The attendance was over 21,000 for a preseason game! Try getting that kind of draw at either baseball stadium in September this season!
