Who is Joakim Nordstrom? That is the question running through many Blackhawks fans heads right now. Nordstrom was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 3rd round (90th pick) in the 2010 draft. Nordstrom has been playing in Sweden since 2008-09. He is a two-way center who has good vision, good hockey sense, and accurate passing ability according to Hockeyfutures.com.
Nordstrom has been playing for the AIK in Sweden’s Elitserien league. In 2011-12, he was assistant captain for the gold medal winning Sweden team at the 2012 World Junior Championship. Nordstrom had the third best plus/minus for Sweden at the World Junior Championships. He was a plus six with 1 goal and 4 assists.
In 2012 Nordstrom was loaned to the AIK because he signed a three-year entry level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.
After completing his season in Sweden, he played in 11 with the Rockford IceHogs. He was a plus two rating with 3 assists.
He is currently apart of the 26 man roster. He is a battle for the last spot on the team. The roster must be reduced to 23 before the season starts. The worries about Nordstrom has to be his frame at 6’1 160Lbs he may be too light for a NHL season, while the other worry would be the most games he’s played in his career was this past season when he played in a combined 54 with his Swedish team and Rockford. The year before that Nordstrom played in 53 combined games.
Is he a dark horse to make the roster? Yes. Every day when he’s taking line rushes instead of Jimmy Hayes, Ben Smith or Jeremy Morin does it look like he is less of a dark horse? yes. Saturday night will be an interesting game at the United Center for Nordstrom and the rest of the bubble guys from Rockford.
What do you think? Will Nordstrom get the final nod to make the roster for the October 1st home opener?
