Brandon Pirri and Kris Versteeg both head towards the net, and Pirri just happens to get there first to put away a blocked Patrick Kane wrister. The Blackhawks show why it’s important to shoot the puck and go hard to the net.
The shot by Sharp is perfectly placed, the key to this play is Marcus Kruger. He drives in hard forcing the D-men to match his speed and then slams the brakes to make a beautiful pass to a wide open Patrick Sharp.
The Captain doesn’t need anyone to cleanup his rebounds, he does it himself. Ben Smith’s hard work in front of the net is a major factor in this play. Not only is he screening Niemi, but hes also out positioning the Sharks’ d-man and using him as an added screen preventing niemi from tracking that puck.
Welcome back Versteeg! Saad does an amazing job to get Niemi to completely lose his net and then finds Versteeg at the top of the crease. Steeger makes no mistake and puts that puck in the back of the net.
Patrick Sharp gets pitchforked on his way to the net and then gets kneed in the head, luckily he takes full advantage of the penalty shot. Sharp attempted his 6th ever penalty shot and scored for the first time in his career. For a man that is as deadly with the puck as he is, it’s hard to believe that stat. Still, it all ends well for the Hawks as they never let up off the gas to let the Sharks back into it.
