We haven’t had a milk carton in a few games, but after a brief vacation it’s back!
This mornings Milk carton goes to the man behind the bench Joel Quenneville. This is what happens when old school coaching and thoughts have early season success and it all comes crashing down in one night.
The first quarter of the season has been Q being Q and getting results so there has been no reason to change. Let’s be honest, first of all if Michal Handzus doesn’t get injured and out for an extended time we may still have never seen Brandon Pirri and the offense flourish.
Secondly, yes Nikolai Khabibulin struggled in his starts, but veterans don’t get sharp at practice. So what happens after a prolonged time off? #39 gets hurt in his first period in what felt like a month, and Corey Crawford now leads the NHL in minutes played. That amount of time has been pretty evident in two of the last 3 times he’s been in between the pipes by getting torched which included 3 quick goals last night in Colorado. Crawford has been sharp and is usually ready for a heavy workload, but the secret to last season was he didn’t have to be out there every night because of the play of Ray Emery. Nobody is expecting that type of performance from the Blackhawks back-ups, but whoever is backing up Crawford needs to be playing in games and not just a gatekeeper.
Lastly, the if it isn’t broke don’t fix it with Sheldon Brookbank reared its ugly head last night. With the Hawks in an early hole in high altitude double shifting anyone isn’t usually in the best interest of any player. Brookbank is an average at best defenseman, but he’s a below average to terrible forward, and the fact that because the Hawks won with him at forward 4 times in 5 outings doesn’t mean it should continue. This type of coaching makes the Hawks short handed on offense on a nightly basis.
The Hawks are still in first place in the Central Division, but 2 of the last three games the Hawks haven’t looked ready to play and in the end that’s the coaches fault and the reason Quenneville is on the Milk Carton this morning!
