The 2013-2014 season is turning into a nightmare for Bryan Bickell. After having a playoff run that no one will ever forget and signing a new contract with a huge pay raise worth $4 million a year, the start to this season has not been one Bickell or the Blackhawks faithful would have expected. In 22 games played Bickell only has 5 goals and 1 assist.
Bickell started out on the line with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews at the start of the season (The same line that dominated the playoffs), but this didn’t last long as the Blackhawks offense was not putting pucks in the net to kick-start the season.
Coach Quenneville being who he is started blending lines and Bickell basically got demoted back to the third line with Andrew Shaw which happened to be the line that he flourished in last season. A strange thing happened on the third line though and its name is Sheldon Brookbank. Q’s doghouse for Jeremy Morin meant a Defenseman would be on the third line with Bickell and in 7 games during this project of sorts it’s safe to say the Bickell’s game and stats have been underwhelming with only 1 goal during this stretch.
To make all of this even worse on Tuesday night in Colorado Bickell injures what appeared to be his ankle but is listed as a lower body injury. Today on WGN radio Joel Quenneville said that Bickell will be out for a couple of weeks with this injury.
This season is a nightmare for Bickell, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Patrick Sharp had a regular season to forget last season, but came on strong and led the team in goals in the postseason. All is not lost, but this is for sure not the start Bickell or Blackhawks fans had wanted to see from him midway through November.
Get well soon Bickell!
