On Thursday 2/6/14, the Blackhawks acquired Peter Regin and Pierre-Marc Bouchard from the New York Islanders for a fourth round pick in the 2014 draft. Regin has appeared in 44 games this season with New York. Regin has two goals and five assists on the season. For his career Regin has 21 goals and 41 assists. The scouting report on Regin stated, “He is a good puck handler, he can create offense at a very high tempo. He skates well and can play center or wing. He has good offensive instincts and is sound defensively”. In every player he is not perfect, his flaws are injury concerns, needs to shoot more often and needs to use his frame more often. The other player in the Blackhawks trade was Pierre Marc Bouchard. Bouchard has recorded four goals and five assists in 28 games with the Islanders. For his career Bouchard has 110 goals and 246 assists. Bouchard is a similar to Regin but our play making forwards who need to shoot more and have injury concerns.
With this move, the Blackhawks addressed their center issue. They acquired two centers that can play offense and are sound defensively. They added depth behind Jonathan Toews, Andrew Shaw, Michal Handzus, and Marcus Kruger.
Personally I am not blown away by this move, but the Blackhawks do not blow people away with their moves. The reviews of the Handzus and Johnny Oduya moves were not good too. The Blackhawks acquire players via free agency and trades that augment their core. The Blackhawks thought their role players would come from within their organization. They thought Brandon Pirri, Jeremy Morin, and Joakim Nordstrom could have bolstered their core this season.
The acquisition of Regin and Bouchard means that Pirri, Morin, and Nordstrom are not ready to be solid contributors at the NHL level. Regin and Bouchard are not SUPPOSED to be the saviors of the Blackhawks. They are role players that need to fill their roles on the Blackhawks.
This was a minor move in the grand scheme of the NHL but it does have major ramifications in the Blackhawks organization. The move should HOPEFULLY relegate Handzus to the bench/ part time player status. The move also sent Brandon Pirri back to Rockford. Pirri was less than impressive in his return. This move could mean that Pirri spends the rest of the year in Rockford.
My knee jerk reaction is that this a good move for the Blackhawks. They added SOLID center depth. Their core of players will make Reign and Bouchard better players. Their numbers should be better than with the Blackhawks than with the Islanders. Those are my thoughts on the trade. What are your thoughts on the move:
