The Rockford IceHogs had two games on the schedule in Week 22, and went 1-1 in the process. The IceHogs also added a free agent to their roster, but the biggest news came off the ice during a game on the weekend.
Friday, March 21 @ Chicago Wolves
The IceHogs kicked off a weekend double-header with their bitter rival Chicago Wolves, their last weekend head-to-head of the season. The IceHogs’ demise started early with a goal from Chicago defenseman Joel Edmundson, and didn’t stop until the final buzzer, sealing a 6-0 victory for the Wolves. Kent Simpson managed 31 saves in the loss, while the ‘Hogs offense put up 23 shots on Jake Allen, who got the shutout. The main event happened at 19:26 of a second period that already saw two fights. Rockford’s Bobby Shea and Chicago’s Ty Rattie dropped the gloves after a major elbowing penalty by Shea, and both were sent off the ice for the remainder of the period. Shea then continued the proceedings in a way you have to see to believe:
Shea was assessed two game misconducts (fighting off the ice and elbowing), finishing with 30 of Rockford’s 57 PIMs.
Saturday, March 22 vs. Chicago Wolves
The teams headed Eastward with Friday’s outburst still fresh in their minds, and took to the ice at BMO Harris Bank Center. The only goals in regulation happened six minutes apart in the infamous second period, with Cody Beach giving the Wolves a short-lived lead that was equalized by Brad Mills of Rockford. Jason LaBarbera (35/36) and Matt Clime (31/32) were perfect the rest of regulation and overtime, and a shootout was needed. Pierre-Marc Bouchard scored the game-winner as LaBarbera stopped Alexandre Bolduc on a must-score opportunity. The ‘Hogs snapped a four-game winless streak with the victory.
- After the Chicago Blackhawks signed Trevor van Riemsdyk to a two-year deal that starts in 2014-15, the IceHogs agreed to terms with the college defenseman on a contract that lasts the rest of the 2013-14 season. Van Riemsdyk recorded 4 goals and 23 points in 26 games for the University of New Hampshire Wildcats this season. Van Riemsdyk had 16 goals and 75 points in three years with the Wildcats.
- The IceHogs recalled Tim Gleason from the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL on Thursday. Gleason has one assist in seven games with the ‘Hogs this season.
- Rockford also loaned Jeremy Morin to the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday, March 21st, after Patrick Kane was assigned to Injured Reserve.
