The Nightmare that was the Ottawa Senators game followed the Hawks to Pittsburgh in the first period. Andrew Shaw after two Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman got crossed up had a great chance for an early goal but got all post. Minutes later Brent Seabrook was doing something we will never know allowed for a 2 on 1 break that the Penguins didn’t miss for the opening goal of the game. The second goal came 21 seconds later and after a very competitive first period the Hawks were down 2-0. The Hawks got a very late powerplay and will have one minute and a half to start the 2nd period to cut the lead in half. Andrew Shaw took some serious punishment in the final seconds.
The Blackhawks looked like they were skating with two left skates for the first half of the period, but a funny thing happened halfway through the period when Sheldon Brookbank fired one from the point and the Andrew Shaw screen was good enough to get the puck past Fleury to cut the lead in half. The score then became irrelevant when Brooks Oprik nailed Jonathan Toews in the corner and the Captain was holding his left arm right away. Toews went right to the locker room and the Hawks were without their Captain. After the Oprik hit one player that looked good was Teuvo who listened to the coach and had some nice plays and shots on goal. One thing is for sure if he gets space he’s dangerous. That being said the Captain is hurt and Kane is out so this is getting depressing really quick.
The story of the Blackhawks seasons since the Olympic break was the third period in a nutshell the Hawks put tremendous pressure on the Penguins for the first 15 minutes of the third period with every Hawks with great chances but Fleury was up to the task. The frustration continued when Sidney Crosby got a 2 on 1 for the second time in the contest and Crosby being as good as he is didn’t miss the second time. Just for fun Crosby deposited an empty net goal to put the final tally on the board 4-1.
The real news of course is the Captain and this is what Quenneville said after the game which of course sounds encouraging!
#Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews day-to-day, according to coach Joel Quenneville. “I don’t think it’s serious.”
