The last time the Chicago Blackhawks and Washington Capitals faced each other it was kind of a special night and not because it was opening night, but it was the night the Hawks raised their 2013 Stanley Cup Championship Banner to the rafters.
The game was a strange one with Brandon Bollig of all players scoring the first goal of the season which happened to be his first career regular season goal, but the Hawks did give up 3 powerplay goals which kicked off an almost season long struggle on the penalty kill for the Hawks. In the end the banner raising night went well with the Hawks scoring 6 goals on the evening ending with a Marian Hossa empty net clincher.
Both teams post-season has been secured with the Hawks locked in as the #3 seed only waiting for their opponent while the Capitals season has been a frustrating one with the NHL leading scorer Alex Ovechkin and teammates failing to make the playoffs and a likely dismissal of coach Adam Oates. Both teams will be playing out the string with different goals to be achieved.
