The NHL announced that Pat Foley has won the Lester Patrick Award honoring outstanding service to hockey in the United States. Foley will be honored on November 17th and a plaque in his honor will be displayed permanently in the Hall of Fame.
Foley has been the Blackhawks play by play announcer for 31 seasons and thanks to Rocky Wirtz was brought back to the organization just in time for the Golden Age of Chicago Blackhawks hockey. Foley has always been a favorite of mine from my days listnening to him on the radio as a kid when Bill Wirtz would only let Blackhawks home games be played on the radio instead of TV.
Foley made players like Murray Bannerman larger than life ,and as a kid you felt like the horn sounded right when Foley got done with his patented He SCORESSSSSSS. Foley has always been one that wanted to have fun in the booth as he described the action which lately has come under some fire as Pat and Eddie sometimes get going down a rabbit trail that they never seem to get back from but all along it has been a fun ride.
Foley didn’t always sugar coat it especially when things turned ugly for the Hawks he called it liked he saw it and this has to be the best 2:12 seconds of footage from Foley because it was from the heart and not just going through the motions.
The Blackhawks honored Foley last April on Pat Foley night, and plenty of writer had a lot to say about Foley including the Great Bob Verdi had this to say. Foley is heading to the Hall of Fame after serving the Chicago Blackhawks for thirty plus years and it is well deserved! People like Doc Emerick but I’m always happier when it’s a big game a Pat Foley is behind the microphone. Here is the video they had about Pat on Pat Foley night last April!
Congrats to Pat Foley!! Make that Pat Foley Hall Of Famer!!
