It’s hump day Blackhawks fans! Time for another Blackhawks Rewind Wednesday!
The Blackhawks played the Colorado Avalanche on December 27 of 2013. That date is also the birthday of Patrick Sharp. Now Sharp has a great way of celebrating birthdays. He scored game-winning goals the day after both of his daughters were born. But on this day, in front of his parents, wife, and daughters, he would have a game that he would never forget!
Both goalies for this meeting were normally back-ups. This game was during Corey Crawford’s injury, so Antti Raanta was starting in his place, and Jean-Sebastien Giguere was giving Semyon Varlamov a rest. Varlamov’s rest would only last for 40 minutes.
Sharp opened up the scoring off a great feed from Duncan Keith. Keith ended up with 3 assists in the game, which earned him 3rd star of the game honors. Jonathan Toews made it 2-0 Hawks only a few minutes later, and Patrick Sharp ended the period with another nice goal, his second of the night, which put everybody on hat-trick watch!
They would not have to wait very long. 27 seconds into the 2nd Period, Sharp struck once again to put the Blackhawks up 4-0! That was Sharp’s third career hat-trick. Jonathan Toews threw salt in the wound with his second goal and finished with 4 total points. Paul Stastny managed to put the Av’s on the board, but it was too late. Michal Handzus and Kris Versteeg added to the Blackhawks rout as they finished the 2nd up 7-1. That would spell the end of Giguere’s night, and Varlamov would come out for the third.
It proved to be a very good third period for Varlamov, as he stopped all 13 of the Hawks shot’s on goal! Young Av’s captain Gabriel Landeskog scored the only goal in the period.
This will be a Hawks game that I will remember for a long time. Not only because it was an absolute rout, but because Patrick Sharp, one of my favourite players had such an amazing and special night!
