We had so much fun doing our Countdown to Faceoff series last season that we decided to do it again. In case you’re new to the series, we’ll do a roster preview as we count down the days until the Chicago Blackhawks October 9th season opener against the Dallas Stars.
When Brad Richards signed as a free agent with the Blackhawks most fans were excited about the possibility of Patrick Kane finally having a center to play along with and so are we but in this countdown the announcement of Richards wearing #91 is exciting as well because it means one more number will have been worn in Chicago Blackhawks history.
Richards is a Conn Smythe winner from his Cup winning team in Tampa Bay. He has some tread on the tires having already played in 982 games but he does average close to 20 goals a season and one would think playing alongside Patrick Kane he will get plenty of assists.
The hope is that Richards is at worst better than Michal Handzus and at the best a huge upgrade and a real center for Kane and company to play with on a nightly basis. The question that will be asked time and time again will be how much gas is left in the tank which we know is a huge question after watching Handzus run out of gas in 2013.
The one thing people may overlook is questioning Richards’s 200 foot game. He’s a career -73 which cannot sit well with Quenneville’s defensive mastermind.
Be on the lookout for our Countdown to Faceoff series as we continue to work our way to the season opener on October 9th. We’re 93 days from the season opener. Is it October yet???
