The Blackhawks KEPT Dan Carcillo for these three reasons!
The Blackhawks General Manager Stan Bowman made a head scratching move at the end of training camp. The Blackhawks signed Daniel Carcillo to a one year contract. His total contract value is $550,000 dollars. Everyone is CRUSHING the Blackhawks for bringing back Carcillo. I’m here to be the voice of reason and to explain to everyone why the Blackhawks KEPT Carcillo. Here are three reasons why the Blackhawks KEPT Carcillo.
- He’s a veteran physical presence: The Blackhawks do not have any physical players on their team. The strength of the Blackhawks is their speed and skill but they still need at least one physical player on the team. If they don’t have one guy who can deliver a legal or illegal hit every once and a while, teams will target the Blackhawks best players. The Blackhawks placed Brandon Manshinter on IR; they traded away Brandon Bollig in the offseason. If we look at the past Blackhawks championship teams, the teams had at least one physical presence. In 2010 it was Adam Burish in 2013 it was Carcillo, Jamal Mayers, and Brandon Bollig. The Blackhawks need at least one on the roster.
- He is a PROVEN player: If we have learned anything during the Quenneville era, it is that he trusts PROVEN guys. Quenneville knows Carcillo. The Blackhawks had him in 2011-12 and 2012-13. Quenneville trusts him over an unproven Manshinter who has not done anything at the NHL level. Unlike Manshinter, Carcillo knows what is expected of his role. He knows he will be a fourth line player and only get about 8 minutes a game. For his career Carcillo has only averaged 10:45 of ice time per game. During his last year with the Blackhawks, he played exactly 8 minutes a game when he dressed. He only appeared in 23 games.
- Carcillo has some SKILL: Carcillo is a proven NHL player with some skill. For his career he has scored 44 goals and has 48 assists. His time with the Blackhawks is best known for the game winning goal against the Avalanche to keep the streak alive. He does not shrink from a big moment.
If people really look closely at the situation, who is Carcillo blocking from the Blackhawks roster? Teuvo? Mashinter? Regin? Teuvo Teravainen needs to adapt to the NHL game. The Blackhawks also want him to develop as a center. Manshinter has appeared in 23 NHL games with no goals and no assists. Peter Regin has 23 goals and 43 assists in 7 years in the NHL. If you compare the numbers, Carcillo’s career numbers are better than Regin’s. It boggles my mind why people were so upset about a guy who is going to play 8 minutes or less a night; the fact of the matter is this: Carcillo is not going to change the fate of the Blackhawks season.
