Chicago Blackhawks Make A Minor Deal To Finish Out Trade Deadline

The Chicago Blackhawks finished out the NHL trade deadline with a minor move. While reintroducing Johnny Oduya to the Chicago media, a minor move was reported by everyone on Twitter. The Blackhawks traded away AHL forwards Spencer Abbott and Sam Carrick to the Anahiem Ducks for Kenton Helgesen and a seventh round pick in 2019.

Abbott was the points leader with the Rockford IceHogs this season with 15 goals and 20 assists. He also represented the Icehogs at the AHL All-Star game.  When the Blackhawks struggling and looking for offense, Abbott was recalled for an audition. He played 8:34 and recorded zero shots, hits, and points.  He also did appear in one game with the Maple Leafs before joining the Hawks. He recorded zero points. Abbott spent last season in the Swedish Hockey League before rejoining the Hawks for a chance to play in the NHL.

Abbott has shown that he can score at the AHL but has not been given much of a chance at the NHL level.

Sam Carrick was second on the Icehogs with 28 points. He did not play a game with the Blackhawks during his tenure, he has however appeared 19 NHL game with the Maple Leafs. For AHL career, he has appeared in 249 games recording 128 points.

Kenton Helgesen and a seventh round pick in 2019.

In return the Blackhawks received Kenton Helgesen and a seventh round pick in 2019.  Helgesen was drafted by the Ducks in 2012. He was a seventh round pick that year and has not played above the ECHL level in his pro career.

The Blackhawks are hoping that the change of scenery helps Helgesen.

Other Prospect News

In other prospect news, the Blackhawks did not trade Ville Pokka. Scott Powers of the Athletic has suggested that Pokka could be a change of scenery trade candidate for the Blackhawks.

With the trade deadline over, Stan Bowman will now focus getting Maxim Shalunov signed per Scott Powers of the Athletic.
