Defensemen Starting To Fly Off The Shelves

By Greg Boysen

It is no secret the Blackhawks are in the market for a defenseman before the February 27th trade deadline.  In the past 24 hours two defensemen have been moved.  Last night the Dallas Stars traded Niklas Grossman to the Philadelphia Flyers for a 2nd round pick in 2012 and a 3rd round pick in 2013.   Reports are saying the Blackhawks were in on Grossman but the Stars wanted Brandon Saad.  If this is true am glad Stan Bowman told Dallas to shove it.  Plus, I am not too thrilled about another Grossman playing in Chicago, I still have mental scars from the last one.

This afternoon the Nashville Predators acquired Hal Gill from the Montreal Canadiens for forwards Blake Geoffrion, Robert Slaney and a 2nd round draft in 2012.  I would have to believe that Gill was on Bowman’s radar as well.  Nashville already boasts the leagues 2nd best power play, and now Gill will boost their penalty kill as well.  That does not help the Blackhawks chances of catching the Preds in the standings.

This is starting to look like a fantasy football draft when the first kicker is drafted and then a run begins.  There are still plenty of good candidates left for Bowman to acquire like Pavel Kubina, Bryan Allen, Jaroslav Spacek,  Erik Johnson, and Chris Campoli.  I am hoping the Colorado Avalanche decide to move Kyle Quincy.  He would be a great fit in Chicago.  Stan Bowman will need to make his move quickly because the price of poker goes up with everyday we get closer to the deadline.
