Blackhawks prospect Dylan Olsen got his first taste of life in the NHL this past season and pretty much held his own.  Olsen was solid in his first stint as a pro.  He didn’t do anything spectacular but he didn’t embarrass himself either.  Olsen is a pretty mobile defensman who has an aggressive side, who has an upside to his offensive game as well.  We didn’t see a whole lot of his aggressiveness or much of an offensive game.  I think he was more worried about not screwing up his defensive assignments to try a big hit or jump into the play offensively and that is ok.  We should see more from him as his confidence grows with more games in the NHL.  One knock of Olsen’s game has been his knack for taking bad penalties.  This was something that did not follow him to the NHL, as he only took 3 minors in 29 total games.  Again, this could change if Olsen becomes more aggressive as a pro.  Now that the Hawks have 6 veteran defensemen signed, it will interesting to see what happens to Olsen.  Another year in Rockford wouldn’t kill him.  He will be the first to get the call if a veteran is moved before the season or gets injured once its began.

2011-2012 Final Grade: B-
