Fansided NHL Mock Draft-Chicago Blackhawks select Derrick Pouliot (D-18th overall)

By Greg Boysen

With the 18th pick in the 2012 Fansided NHL mock draft the Chicago Blackhawks select defenseman Derrick Pouliot of the Portland Winterhawks.

Pouliot is exactly what the Blackhawks look for in a defenseman.  He his an offense minded defenseman who is very confident with puck.  According to scouts, Pouliot’s greatest asset his is passing skills.  He is regarded as the best puck moving defenseman in the WHL.  He has great speed which allows him to lead the rush down the ice.  His ability to pass and offensive vision earned him more time on Portland’s power play, where he excelled. 6 of his 11 regular season goals came on the power play.  He added 48 assists for a grand total of 59 points in 72 regular season games.  He had 17 points (3 G, 14 A) in 22 playoff games this season as well.

Pouliot will need to work on his defensive game in the Blackhawks system.  At 5-11, 170 lbs Pouliot will need to bulk up before being able to bang with the big boys.  He does have problems with being out of position in his own zone and taking penalties.  He will make some glaring mistakes with the puck, by trying to force it into places it shouldn’t go.  Scouts view Pouliot as a bit of a project, but with the veterans the Blackhawks have signed and what is already in the system, they have plenty of time to bring him along slowly.
