Hawks Hire Gauthier, Q Speaks, Edzo Gets The Call, Hossa Update

By Greg Boysen

Yesterday turned out to be quite the newsworthy day in the world of the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hawks have hired former Montreal Canadians general manager Pierre Gauthier to be their new director of player personnel.   Gauthier did not have a good run in Montreal.  He was hired in February on 2010 but was let go this past March.  He came under heavy criticism for naming the non French speaking Randy Cunneyworth interim head coach after firing Jacques Martin in December.  Gauthier will be reunited with Marian Hossa who he drafted in 1997 while he was the general manager for the Ottawa Senators.  Gauthier has been in stands with Joel Quenneville for the duration of the prospect camp.

Coach Q met with the media yesterday after prospect camp and talked about various subjects.  He was very impressed with Brandon Saad and I would not be surprised if he is on the opening night roster. Q thinks Saad can not only make the team this year but be a major contributor as well.  He also mentioned how 1st round draft pick  Tervo Tevainan raised some eyebrows in is first workouts with the organinzation.  Tevainan had a goal and an assist during the team’s scrimmage yesterday.  He gave a vote of confidence to goalie Corey Crawford, which is expected after trying to sign Martin Brodeur.  Q also said that an announcement on the new assistant coach is coming soon. Yeah? Well so is Christmas.

One of the names rumored to get the new assistant coaching gig, Ed Olczyk, got the call from United State Hockey Hall of Fame.  The Chicago native was drafted 3rd overall by the Blackhawks in the 1984 entry draft.  Olczyk racked up 794 points (342 G, 452 A) in 1031 career games with the Hawks, Toronto, Winnipeg, New York Rangers, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh.  He was a member of the 1994 New York Rangers that won the Stanley Cup.  He scored 77 goals and added 132 assists in two stints over five seasons with the Blackhawks.

In a final bit of news, it was announced that Marian Hossa will be a part of the Blackhawks Convention next weekend.  This is very encouraging news.  It will very good to see Hoss at the podium and enjoying his teammates and his fans.
