Are The Blackhawks Going To Make A Move Arnott?

By Greg Boysen

Yesterday I wrote that the Blackhawks should pursue San Jose’s Joe Thornton if he is made available.  The chances of that actually happening are slim to none.  There is one veteran player who is still on the market and there for the taking rather cheaply.  Veteran center Jason Arnott is still out there for the taking.  At 6’5, 220 lbs Arnott is still a force in front of the net which is what the Hawks are lacking.

The biggest name left on the open market is Shane Doan but I think Arnott is better than Doan.  Arnott scored 17 goals last season and added 17 assists in 72 games for the St Louis Blues.  Doan scored 22 goals and racked up 28 assists in 79 games.  Arnott still contributes on the power play as 6 of his 17 goals came with the man advantage.  Doan scored 5 power play goals last season.  Arnott finished the season at a plus 13 and Doan was a -5.  Arnott has played 48 more regular season games than Doan and has a 150 more career points than him.  Arnott has 938 career points (417 G, 511 A) compared to Doan’s 788 points (318 G, 470 A).  Arnott has 145 career power play goals compared to Doan’s 98.  Arnott has played 67 more playoff games and has a 0.60 points per game average in the post season.  Doan’s career postseason points per game average is 0.51.  Doan is most likely going to get a 4 year 16 million dollar contract.  Arnott can be signed to a one year deal in the 2.5 million dollar range.  When you look at all the numbers I would much rather have Jason Arnott on my team than Shane Doan.  Arnott would look very good in the Indian Head this fall.
