On this date in Chicago Blackhawks history,
On this date at the United Center in 2008 on the same night Pierre Pilote’s #3 number was retired, the Blackhawks also retired the #3 for Keith Magnuson as well. Magnuson played 11 seasons for the Blackhawks from 1969-1980 and then coached the Hawks from 1980-1982.
Like Pilote, Magnuson was also a team captain from 1976-1980, and like Pilote when he retired he was at the time the all-time Blackhawks leader in penalty minutes. Magnuson ended his Hawks career with 14 goals and 125 assists.
As with all Blackhawks before 1980 I didn’t get a chance to see and remember seeing them play, here is a link to a very good article about Keith Magnuson’s career and life. On this date two great Hawks that wore #3 had their numbers retired and will only be seen from now on in the rafters of the United Center.
