Happy Memorial Day,

I would like to personally THANK anyone that reads Blackhawk Up and has served or is currently serving  in our military you truly are my heroes!!  As this is Memorial Day please take a moment to think of all the men and woman who have sacrificed their lives so we can be free and live in this great country the USA!

The Chicago Blackhawks organization does a fantastic job of honoring a current and retired military officer before the singing of the national anthem before every home  game at the United Center. There is something special hearing Jim Cornelison singing the anthem and always seeing our heroes standing right next to him.  Most organizations are now doing some  type of honoring  of a veteran at sometime during the event which is fantastic.

The Blackhawks nickname is from a military background.  The Blackhawks original owner Fredric McLaughlin made his money in coffee but in his younger days was the one of the commanding officers for the 333rd Machine Gun Battalion of the 86th Infantry during World War I.  This Battalion’s nickname was the Blackhawk division. The name was in honor of the Sauk Indian leader Chief Black Hawk who fought in the Illinois region.

While today is a great BBQ day please remember that if it wasn’t for the great sacrifice we wouldn’t get to enjoy this Holiday.

Thanks to all that sacrificed and are serving today!!
