The Blackhawks dug themselves a 3-1 hole to the hated Detroit Red Wings and everyone expected that Detroit would finish off the Hawks in Game #6 and be able to end their Western Conference rivalry with a huge upset.
Things were not looking so good as the game headed to the third period with the Hawks were trailing 2-1 at the Joe in an arena where they had lost 8 straight playoff games dating all the way back to 1995.
The Blackhawks 2013 season can be described as a season for the dramatic and though normally it came very late in games this one was a quick explosion that started with the Detroit defense falling asleep and letting Handzus camp in front of Jimmy Howard and burying the game tying goal 51 seconds into the third period. With the weight lifted the Hawks went on the attack and Bickell in front of Howard notched a go ahead goal. To close out the Hawks scoring Michael Frolik got a penalty shot called after rushing Howard.
Frolik became the first NHL player to ever score two penalty playoff shots all-time when he beat Howard. The biggest road win of the season for the Hawks and a role player scored the game winner on a penalty shot. This didn’t win the series but it sure felt like it did!
