Chicago Blackhawks Milk Carton Opening Night

By Keith Schultz

When a player or coach doesn’t really show up during a Blackhawks game, they get put on the Milk Carton. As most of you know, people’s pictures used to be put at the back of milk cartons when they went missing. So the Milk Carton for the Blackhawks is more about who went missing or played terribly during the game.

Today’s inaugural Blackhawks milk carton goes to rookie Joakim Nordstrom.  His official stat line from Tuesday night reads like this:

Time On The Ice-12:23

Powerplay Time On The Ice-:17

+/- +1

Faceoffs- 0 for 3

Summary– This is not how Nordstrom wanted his first game in the NHL to go it went from good to bad to ugly.  He was on the ice for the Brandon Bollig surprise goal of the game to kick off the scoring, but it went downhill from that point.

The biggest reason for Nordstrom to end up on the milk carton is that the penalty kill was atrocious last night after being one of the shining stars of the 2013 Stanley Cup run.  One of the stars of the penalty kill Michael Frolik (who scored two goals for the Winnipeg Jets last night) is gone, and out of training camp the name Nordstrom first surfaced because of how the staff liked his play on the PK with Marcus Kruger. Well the penalty kill went 3 for 6 against the Capitals which isn’t acceptable on any level and Nordstrom was part of the poor showing last night.

Lastly, thanks to Corey Crawford in the final minutes saving the day Nordstrom wasn’t the goat of the night, but Nordstrom’s penalty in the final minutes sealed the deal in appearing on the Milk Carton. On another penalty kill Nordstrom when clearing the puck not only cleared the zone, but he cleared the entire rink shooting the puck off the ice and getting a delay of game penalty and creating a 5 on 3 at the end of the night.

Not the best debut by Nordstrom, he will have to bring a better effort Saturday night at the United Center when the Tampa Bay Lighting visit the Blackhawks.
