A certain tweet has stuck in my head all day, something that will ring true with many Blackhawks fans:

Now, it’s not the money that surprises me, or the players on that list, but the ones that are not: Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. Every player in that elite octet of forwards deserves that pay cheque; However, the fact that the two best forwards omitted from this list are on the same team is no coincidence. Who is the mastermind that was able to score those two deals? None other than Stan Bowman, Blackhawks GM. Bowman negotiated not one, but two, identical five-year contracts for the dynamic duo. One player has captained a team to two Stanley Cups by the age of 25, and the other has won more Conn Smythe and Stanley cups than Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, combined.

Are Toews and Kane in for a raise? That question will be answered in two years time, and anything can happen in the NHL, as everyone surely knows. However, if they were due up in 2013, the answer is an easy yes. With those extensions would come the departure of some of the Blackhawks’ depth pieces, the teams secret killer all throughout their 2013 season. With Bowman saying Toews and Kane will be ‘Blackhawks forever’ in the off-season, this might just be a possibility. However, don’t doubt Bowman. He has made the right moves again and again, and will win a GM of the Year award very soon.
