Chicago Blackhawks: Gritty Player of the Week

Personally, I have been waiting all season to give this honor to Brandon Bollig. It was only a matter of time before he gave us a mean streak that would rival those of ‘Hawks enforcers past. The performance that stands out was last week’s bar fight with the rival St. Louis Blues.

Here you can see the full exchange, but let us put some perspective on what it was like to watch this scuffle unfold. In a tied game in the 3rd period, a contest that had already seen a ton of hard hitting and testy play from 2 teams that seem to hate each other a bit more every year, Roman Polak of the Blues clearly boarded a defenseless Marcus Kruger.

Bollig just happened to be about 5 feet to the side of this exchange and certainly wanted to get his say in the matter, just not with any words. He engaged Polak, and this led to most players on the ice rushing to prevent certain homicide by Bollig, who instead was able to trade rabbit punches with Polak before being sent to the locker room.  When all was said and done, Bollig managed to tack on 17 penalty to his season total and I am sure he is looking forward to his next game against Polak and the Blues,

With another solid performance against the Florida Panthers this week, it was easy to hand Bollig this’ weeks honor. Honorable mention goes to Brent Seabrook, who has been all over the ice the past few games. He had a few big hits against both Blues and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Seabrook’s combination of offense and defense has been crucial to the team’s success this year and it would be no surprise to see him become the grittiest player on the ‘Hawks in the coming weeks.
