MilkCarton Khabibulin (Photoshop by Joe Kremel)
When a player or coach doesn’t really show up during a Blackhawks game, they get put on the Milk Carton. As most of you know, people’s pictures used to be put at the back of milk cartons when they went missing. So the Milk Carton for the Blackhawks is more about who went missing or played terribly during the game
It isn’t very hard to figure out who was going to end up on the Milk Carton after Tuesday nights game. Nikolai Khabibulin had a 2nd period to forget letting in 3 goals on 7 shots. He looked pretty steady in the first period only letting in a late goal on 15 shots while making some big stops, but the 2nd period was the 2nd coming of Cristobal Huet. The Blackhawks don’t need their backup to stand on his head or even end up with a record like Ray Emery did last season. The Hawks do need their goalies to stop the shots that need to be stopped and that was Khabibulin’s problem in his last two starts.
Too many pucks have gotten past Khabibulin at the beginning of the season, and getting pulled in the 2nd period isn’t what you want to see. Luckily, this story has a happy ending as Jonathan Toews and his hat trick came in to save the day for #39.
The Hawks had Khabibulin’s back after the game, but if the next time #39 is in between the pipes he has to have a better showing or having Khabibulin’s back will be harder and harder company line to speak!
