The 2013-14 season started well for the Blackhawks, with all of their key individuals getting back in the groove early: Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, and Patrick Sharp. The odd one out of the four, Marian Hossa, was still waiting on a breakout week, and it is finally here. Hossa was performing well in the first 10 games of the season, but wasn’t yet at his full potential. Hossa took an assist home from games against Minnesota and Winnipeg, and scored a goal against the Calgary Flames, but earned this week’s pay in the Blackhawks’ 6-5 win over the Ottawa Senators. Hossa was everywhere he needed to be this week, whether that was leading a rush, finding open ice on the power-play, or putting himself in good defensive position. When Hossa got the puck, it stayed glued to his stick until he passed or shot it, bringing back his exceptional puck protection that was a key on the second line last season. Hossa is a snug fit with Patrick Kane on the power-play, as the two combined to score more than once this week. Hossa’s outbreak was one of the last for the Blackhawks’ top offensive contributors, but late is better than never. If #81 can maintain a pace like this all season, Chicago will be in good shape come March.
The Blackhawks play host to the Jets for their second meeting in 5 days, before two weekend games against the Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers.
