Before we get to the game recap, there are things that are bigger than sports. Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone who was affected by the bad storms that hit the Midwest today.
Now onto the recap: the Chicago Blackhawks welcomed the San Jose Sharks to the United Center tonight. The Sharks came into the United Center with a 13-2-5 record with 31 points on the season. The Sharks had won three in a row coming into tonight. Meanwhile the Blackhawks had been thumped by the Nashville Predators 7-2 in Nashville in their last game. The Sharks boasted former Blackhawks Martin Havlat and Antti Niemi. This was the first home game for Kris Versteeg since Game 5 of the 2010 Stanley Cup finals. This was a showdown between two powerhouse teams in the Western Conference.
Here is the period breakdown:
1st period: The pace of this game was fast right from the start. the Sharks jumped on the Blackhawks early, however, the Sharks would come up empty. Brandon Pirri would jump start the scoring for the Blackhawks. Pirri scored to put the Blackhawks up 1-0. The Sharks would have their chances but would be unsuccessful against Corey Crawford. The first period ended 1-0 in favor of the Blackhawks.
2nd period: The only blemish against Crawford tonight would come in the second period. Crawford mishandled a shot by Joe Pavelski for the Sharks lone goal. The Sharks would tie the game 1-1. The Blackhawks would take the lead in the second period and would never look back. Marcus Kruger would setup Patrick Sharp on a niffy move. Sharp buried the slap shot to put the Blackhawks up 2-1. The second period would end 2-1 in favor of the Blackhawks.
3rd period: Jonathan Toews would drive the net against Niemi and score the Blackhawks third goal of the night. Crawford and the Blackhawks would dodge a few early bullets from the Sharks. The score would be 3-1 until late in third period. Kris Versteeg would make his “homecoming” memorable. Versteeg would score the fourth goal of the evening. Very late in the game, Patrick Sharp would be taken down on his way to the net. He would be awarded a penalty shot. Sharp would make the most of his chance and score the final goal of the game. The Blackhawks would defeat the San Jose Sharks 5-1.
News and Notes:
–Brandon Pirri has four points in the last four games.
-Kris Vertseeg scored his third goal of the season and first with the Blackhawks.
-The Blackhawks recalled Antti Raanta from Rockford. He will get his first start on the “Circus trip”.
-Tonight was the last home game for Blackhawks in the month of November. They will not return until December 2nd.
–Marian Hossa missed his second game in a row with a lower body injury.
