Rival, Rival is defined by Free as “One who attempts to equal or surpass another, or who pursues the same object as another: a competitor”. The Chicago Blackhawks lost their biggest rival this offseason the Detroit Red Wings due to the NHL realignment.  Most people would say the Blackhawks still have the Vancouver Canucks and St. Louis Blues as rivals. It could be me, but the first game with the Canucks did not have the same feel as in previous years.  There was not the blood boiling hatred for the Canucks like in years past. That could be due to the lack of playoff series.  The Blues game in contrast felt like a pure hatred from both teams.

On Tuesday, the Blackhawks will be facing their newest rival in the Dallas Stars. The Blackhawks will be squaring off with the Stars for the third time this season.  People might be questioning why the Stars are the Blackhawks newest rival.

Here are three reasons why the Stars are the Blackhawks newest rival:

1. A Villain- In every great rivalry there is a hero and a villain. The villain in this rivalry is Antoine Roussel. Roussel has drawn the ire of the Blackhawks and their fans. Roussel has taken “runs” at Blackhawks stars Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp in their two previous meetings.  Andrew Shaw and Roussel fought in their second meeting.  Shaw did not forget the “liberties” Roussel took with Kane and Sharp.  Roussel would cement his role as the villain when he scored the game winning goal and taunted the Blackhawks faithful.

2. A Competitive series- Based on the rival definition, a rival must be a competitor. The Sharks have played competitive games against the Blackhawks. In three meetings, the Blackhawks have won two out of three games.  On November 9th, the final was 5-2 in favor the Blackhawks.  On November 29th, the final was 2-1 in a Blackhawks victory in a shootout. The shootout went 11 rounds. The third meeting was a Stars victory 4-3 over the Blackhawks.  All three previous matches came down to the third period and could have gone either way.

3. Division opponent- Rivals are usually division opponents.  That means a lot of games. The Blackhawks and the Stars will be entering their fourth matchup on Tuesday night. They will play a total of five times on the season.  There will be two more matchups this season to stoke the fire between these two rivals.  If by some grace of the NHL gods, the Stars and Blackhawks might even face each other in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
