The first period against the Avalanche was about as good of a start as the team could have asked for. The Hawks took control of the puck and showed off their puck possession which featured a shift by Patrick Kane and Kris Versteeg where it appeared they had the puck for a solid minute.  At the end of a shift change midway through the first period, Duncan Keith found Patrick Sharp and he charged the Avs Net and buried it for a 1-0 lead.  The Hawks continued to apply pressure while owning the puck in the first period, and later in the period Marian Hossa won the puck behind the net and put a shot on goal that the Captain followed up for his 14th goal of the season and a 2-0 Hawks lead.  The Hawks got a late powerplay which was their 2nd of the period and they cashed in when the Birthday boy Sharp shot one in through a Andrew Shaw screen.  Against a divisional rival, this 3-0 start was a great way to come back from Christmas break!

It only took less than a minute for Patrick Sharp to pick up his third career hat trick when he flicked a back hander in for a 4-0 lead!  A great sequence happened later in the period when Matt Duchene was in on a breakaway and Patrick Sharp flew in on the back check and stole the puck cleanly and then fired a rink long pass to Jonathan Toews who scored his second goal of the night.  The Av’s picked up their first goal of the night quietly after the Captain’s goal and momentum seemed to shifting a tad when Niklas Hjalmarsson went to the penalty box for holding but the Hawks Penalty Kill was great and then the Hawk picked back up the momentum and after two great passes from Kris Versteeg and Patrick Kane, Michal Handzus had a tap in goal.  At the tail end of the period Versteeg scored and the Hawks destruction of the Av’s was complete with 20 minutes left to play.

The third period was nothing more than a 20 minute open skate with the Colorado picking up a goal and the Hawks trying to get Jonathan Toews a hat trick. Toews best chance was a great pass from Seabrook to set up a break away that the Captain came up empty handed.  A big easy win against a divisional opponent tonight at the United Center.

-Keith picked up 3 more assists to give him 33 on the season.

-Both Sharp and Toews had 4 point nights.

-Raanta gives up 2 goals a game or less every night it seems.

-The last two games the Hawks have out shot their opponent 74-30 while out scoring them 12-4.

-Back at it tomorrow night in St. Louis! Time for another revenge game!

-Happy Birthday Sharpie!!
