With the announcement of Team Canada Tuesday, we decided to speculate like every other expert on the Team Canada roster. The goalies were probably the easiest to picks because of injury. The defensemen were the hardest to pick because the uncertainty of what style of play Canada will want to play.
Let’s hope we are close to correct to the real team, here goes:
Goalies: Carey Price (19-11-4 with a 2.26 GAA & 92.7 save %), Mike Smith(15-10-8 with a 2.89 GAA & 91.1 save %, and Marc-Andre Fleury(24-10-1 with a 2.33 GAA & 91.9 save %). Price and Smith are the consensus picks to make the team. With Roberto Luongo being injured AGAIN, Marc-Andre Fleury makes the team as my dark hose candidate. Blackhawks Corey Crawford suffered a groin injury early in the season. He will not be able to overcome that injury and will not be chosen for Team Canada.
Defenseman: Duncan Keith, Jay Bouwmeester, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Drew Doughty, Alex Pietrangelo, Kris Letang, and P.K. Subban. Keith (3 g 42a +18) is a lock and Norris Trophy candidate again this season. Bouwmeester (3 g 24 a + 21) and Pietrangelo (5 g 23a +15) are playing extremely well with the Blues this season. Doughty (6g 17a + 13) gives Canada a veteran leader and offensive defenseman. Letang and Subban are my dark horse picks here. Subban might be left off the roster because he is not a fit on what team Canada is trying to do. Subban (7 g 26a +13) is the reigning Norris Trophy Winner. Letang (6 g 6 a +5) makes the team because Shea Weber has been out a significant amount of time with Rocky Mountain fever. Brent Seabrook has been on the bubble this season and his bubble will pop. Seabrook will not make the team.
Forwards: Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, Logan Couture, John Tavares, Ryan Getzlaf, Patrice Bergeron, Milan Lucic, Matt Duchene, Patrick Sharp, Corey Perry, Mike Richards, Claude Giroux, Rick Nash, and Martin St. Louis.
Crosby (23 g 40a +11) , Toews( 15 g 29a + 21), Tavares( 17g, 29, -4) , Getzlaf (20g 28a +17) , Perry (23g 21a + 17), and St. Louis (17 g 21a +12) were LOCKS for this team. The question between those guys is: who wears the Captain C, Crosby, Toews, or Tavares? The only two questionable selections I have made are Lucic and Richards. I do not have the same faith in Jamie Benn as Bob McKenzie does. That is why I took Lucic. I also do not think Steven Stamkos will be healthy enough to play in the Olympics. Stamkos has been practicing BUT he is too much of a gamble to be on the roster. That’s why Mike Richards is on the team.
Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp was left off the 2010 team, some people feel he might be left off the 2014 roster. My question to those people is HOW?? He has 25 goals and 21 assists and is a +22! Sharp is a LOCK for Team Canada-This is not a HOMER pick, the number do not lie.
By the way: Does any team have a stronger collection of forwards in the world?
Those are my picks/guesses for Team Canada, What are yours?
