The tone for the first period was set in the first period when Brandon Bollig took an early penalty and the Phoenix Coyotes Keith Yandle blew one past Corey Crawford just past the one minute mark of the game.  The Coyotes owned most of the period even building up a 9-1 shots on goal in the period before the Hawks got some shots on Mike Smith to close out the period at 10-7. The best move of the period was made by Brandon Saad as he blew by the Coyotes defense but Smith was up to the task. Crawford after the early goal was pretty sharp for the rest of the period keeping the score close at 1-0 Coyotes at the end of one period.

The majority of the second period was pretty boring with lots of skating and not much going on.  Finally towards the end of the period Brandon Saad charged the net and totally slammed into Mike Smith blowing him up right into his own net.  Saad was penalized but so was Rozsival for unsportsmanlike conduct causing the Hawks to have a 5 on 3 Penalty Kill opportunity.  The Coyotes converted on one goal when Crawford got smacked in the head by a falling Coyote but no interference was called.  2-0 was the score at the end of 2 periods in one of the more boring games of the season.

Nothing happened in the third period on either side of the puck.  The Coyotes are stuctured to play with a lead and they did a great job doing that. The Hawks couldn’t get one past Smith and it sure seemed like it was the 2012 playoffs all over again.

The shutout was the first the Hawks had suffered in the last 126 games.
