USA Defeats Slovenia 5-1!

By Sean Fitzgerald

Team USA was coming off their biggest win this Olympics. Team USA defeated Team Russia in an epic battle of two Hockey and World Powers. TJ Oshie was the hero the game. Oshie kept scoring in the shootout when the USA needed him. He would eventually score the game winning goal. After their huge victory over Russia, there was no rest for Team USA. They took on Slovenia the very next day.

Slovenia was coming off their first Olympic victory. Slovenia defeated Slovakia 3-1 on Saturday to propel them into their matchup with Team USA. This is Slovena’s first Olympic tournament ever. Could Team USA suffer a letdown after their huge win against Russia?

Team USA answered that question with a loud NO! Team defeated Slovenia 5-1. TJ Oshie the star in the Russian game was hoping to share the spotlight. Phil Kessel heard Oshie’s request and joined him in the spotlight. Kessel scored three goals in a row to stake the USA 3-0 lead (2-0 after the first period and 3-0 in the second period).  Kessel was the first American to record a hat trick in the Olympics since John St Clair.

USA would not be done scoring in the second period as Blake Wheeler showed off his speed and hit Ryan McDonagh for the fourth goal of the game. In the third period David Backes was rewarded for crashing the net with Team USA’s fifth goal of the game.

Once Team USA was firmly in front the focus shifted to securing the shutout for backup goalie Ryan Miller. Miller got his start over Jonathon Quick. Quick was 2-0 thus far in the Olympic. Miller lost his shutout very late in the game. Marcel Rodman beat Miller with less than a minute left.

With the victory Team secured the second seed in the medal round. They seem to be on a collision course with Canada before the Gold medal game.
