With the flurry of the NHL trades today the Blackhawks decided to join in the frenzy. The Blackhawks have acquired David Rundblad and Mathieu Brisebois from the Phoenix Coyotes. The Blackhawks sent the Coyotes a second round pick in the 2014 NHL draft. Rundblad will join the Blackhawks while Brisebois will report to Rockford.

Rundblad has appeared in 12 games with the Coyotes amassing one assist. Rundblad for his NHL career has recorded 1 goal and 8 assists in 50 games. Rundblad was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the 2009 NHL draft. He was traded to the Ottawa Senators in 2010. In 2011, Rundblad was traded to Phoenix in the deal that netted Ottawa Kyle Turris.

Rundblad did have a successful career in Sweden before coming to the NHL. Prior to coming to the NHL Rundblad tallied 73 points in the Swedish Hockey League from 2007-2011. He played with the Skelleftea in the Swedish Hockey League.  Rundblad was also a member of the silver medal winning Swedish World Championship in 2011.

Brisebois has recorded 1 goal and 5 assists in 28 AHL games this season. Prior to his time in the AHL, Brisebois played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2009-2013. He was selected to QHJHL Second All Star Team and was named as one of three finalists for the Emile Bouchard Trophy (QMJHL’s Top defenseman) following the 2012-13 campaign. He signed with Coyotes as a free agent in 2013. Brisebois might be viewed as replacement to Dylan Olsen in the Blackhawks system.

Expect Rundblad to split time with Michal Rozsival on the third defensive pairing with Nick Leddy. This might be the only move the Blackhawks make this trade deadline. This move is viewed as a good under the radar move. Rundblad joins the Swedish triplets in Marcus Kruger, Johnny Oduya, and Niklas Hjalmarsson.

The Blackhawks have been busy making minor moves recently, they traded Brandon Pirri to Florida for draft picks and re-signed Brandon Bollig to a three deal.

The Blackhawks return to the United Center against the Avalanche tonight. This is the first home game at the United Center since January 26th against the Jets.
