The NHL had floated out the idea that there would only be two winter outdoors games this season with the Washington Capitals being already awarded the 2015 Winter Classic so the chances were slim that the Blackhawks would be getting a chance to play again outdoors in the upcoming season.

Well, it looks like that has changed with the Blackhawks being the team, instead of an Eastern Conference rival, to play in the Nation’s Capital on January 1 in the Winter Classic.  This is according to Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie Twitter Account

It’s safe to say that the NHL looked at the TV ratings during the playoffs for this decision, and although the Kings vs Rangers Final received great ratings in the Stanley Cup Final, it was the numbers that Chicago was providing during the Western Conference Finals that was eye-popping.

There will be plenty more to talk about when the NHL makes the official announcement but it looks like Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, and possibly Mr Outdoor goal scorer Kris Versteeg will get their third shot at an outdoor game with their career records outside at 1-1.

Another January 1st where hockey instead of college football will be king in Chicago!!

What are your thoughts on the Hawks playing in the Winter Classic again? My thoughts are last years Stadium Series games was one of the funnest regular season games I’ve watched in a long time and I can’t wait to see them in action again outside!
