Chicago Blackhawks First Round Selection: Nick Schmaltz

The Chicago Blackhawks made a last second trade to move up to the 20th pick in the first round. They traded the 27th pick and the 62nd pick to San Jose for the 20th and 179th.

They used the  number 20 pick to select Nick Schmaltz.

Schmaltz came up through the Bantam and Midget leagues playing for the Chicago Mission. In the USHL he played for the Green Bay Gamblers. In his final year with the Gamblers, he had 18 goals and 45 assists for 63 points in 55 games. He had a minus-3 plus/minus. He was also selected to the U.S. Under 18 National Team but had zero points in 2 games.

Schmaltz is prepared to attend the University of North Dakota next year.
