The Chicago Blackhawks have announced the contract extensions that all Blackhawks fans have been excited to see and dreaded to see the cost.  It appears that the two Blackhawks stars have re-signed for 8 years for 10.5 million a season which means they are going to be Blackhawks until they are in their mid 30’s.

The Cap naysayers are going to be out there saying it was way too high and this will cause the second purge of the Blackhawks roster repeating the painful purge of 2010. First the NHL’s new TV contract will kick in next year which will kick up the salary cap each year with a huge boost next season.  Secondly, the cap will go up each year so this contract will look like a bargain when it gets four or five years out.

Lastly, these two Blackhawks are generational players not just good players or fan favorites.  They are great players that can be easily compared to Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull but with Toews and Kane already hoisting two Stanley Cups to Mikita’s and Hull’s one Cup and both the Hawks superstars having already claimed a Conn Smythe trophy.

We will have plenty of time to react and dissect the new contracts and try to figure out what Stan is going to have to do with the salary cap, but today is a great day in Chicago Blackhawks history as two of their best players to ever wear the Blackhawks jersey have re-signed for 8 more years!!!

What is your reaction to the signings?
