We had so much fun doing our Countdown to Faceoff series last season that we decided to do it again.  In case you’re new to the series, we’ll do a roster preview as we count down the days until the Chicago Blackhawks  October 9th season opener against the Dallas Stars.

Tony Esposito (1970-1984)

Games-873

Wins-418

Losses-302

Ties-147

Goals Against Average-2.93

Save Percentage-.859

Shutouts-74

Playoffs

Games-99

Wins-45

Losses-53

Goals Against-3.07

Shutouts-6

There is only one number between 1-59 that has only been worn by only one Blackhawk and that’s #35 worn  by Tony Esposito.  Esposito holds almost every Blackhawks goalie record in franchise history, but the one thing Tony O couldn’t do is win the Big one for the Blackhawks especially in 1971. With the Hawks up 2-0 in Game #7 heading to the third period he allowed a goal from center ice and when the period was over the Montreal Canadiens were skating around the Chicago Stadium with the Stanley Cup instead of the Blackhawks.

Tony had 15 shutouts in his rookie season in contrast

Corey Crawford

has a Stanley Cup but only 10 shutouts in his career. Tony’s career was fantastic without a Cup win in Chicago, and here is a list of accomplishments he was able to do while in net for Chicago.

  • Calder Memorial Trophy (1970)
  • Vezina Trophy (1970, 1972, 1974)
  • NHL All-Star Game Goalie (1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1980)
  • Chicago Blackhawks all-time shutouts leader (74)
  • Chicago Blackhawks and NHL single season record for shutouts (15)
  • Seven-consecutive seasons with 30-plus wins (1969-1976)
  • Chicago Blackhawks career wins leader (418)

What is your favorite memory of Tony Esposito?
