The Winter Classic is only 117 days away and the site for the event still hasn’t been officially announced. Today according to sources close to the negotiations, Nationals Park has reached agreement with the NHL to host the 2015 Winter Classic.

Nationals Park was the favorite site all along to host the Winter Classic but nothing official was announced when Washington was awarded the Winter Classic, or when the Blackhawks were announced as their opponent for the outdoor matchup on  January 1, 2015.

The other possible venues were of course Fed Ex Field and RFK both football stadiums in the D.C. area with a much higher seating capacity than Nationals Park.

This will be the first Winter Classic between two teams from different conferences and goes to show how much the popularity of the Blackhawks have grown nationally since winning 2 Stanley Cups in the past 5 seasons.

There still won’t be an official announcement until later this month but it looks like Nationals Park on January 1st will be the centerpiece of the hockey world with everyone around the country and the world  getting to see Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and company take on the Washington Capitals.

What venue did you want the Winter Classic to be played at on January 1?
