We had so much fun doing our Countdown to Faceoff series last season that we decided to do it again. The calendar has turned into September ,we look at jersey numbers from past and present as we count down the days until October 9th and opening night against the Dallas Stars.

We are down to 18 short days until opening night and a number that hangs in the rafters of the United Center. Denis Savard wasn’t the first Chicago Blackhawks to wear jersey #18 but he was the last and it will never be worn again.

Denis Savard was the #3 pick in the 1980 draft and he almost instantly became a Blackhawks legend as one of the most exciting players to ever lace up the skates in the NHL let alone wear a Blackhawks jersey.  Savard patented the spin-0-rama a move that has been recently outlawed in shootouts but can still be executed in game action but no one will be able to use it as a weapon as good as Savard did in the 80’s.

Savard was part of one of the best lines in Blackhawks history with Steve Larmer and Al Secord and he was the mistro orchestrating scoring at record rates in the 80’s.  Savard would get traded to Montreal for Chris Chelios but would return with a Stanley Cup he won with the Canadiens in 1993 and after retiring eventually become the Blackhawks coach.

Savard had a lot of influence on the current Blackhawks core when they first turned pro and gave them the room to grow and become great players before getting replaced with Joel Quenneville at the beginning of the 2009 season.
