Rockford IceHogs 2014 Training Camp

By Cindy Crawford

Rockford IceHogs 2014 Training Camp starts Sunday, September 28 at the BMO Harris Bank Center. This is the eighth season in the AHL as the top affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks and we’ve been watching quite a few Hogs wearing Blackhawk sweaters in their camp and preseason games.

There are 16 players who participated in the Blackhawks Training Camp. Forwards Alex Broadhurst, Phillip Danault, Ryan Hartman, Drew LeBlanc, Brandon Mashinter, Mark McNeill, Jeremy Morin, Joakim Nordstrom, Garret Ross and Teuvo Teravainen and defensemen Mathieu Brisebois, Adam Clendening, Klas Dahlbeck, Stephen Johns and Viktor Svedberg played with Rockford IceHogs last season along with goalies Mac Carruth and Kent Simpson.

For the 2014-15 season there are five players under AHL contracts with Rockford. They are forwards Ryan Schnell and Jamie Wise, along with defensemen Kirill Gotovets, Justin Holl and Zach Miskovic. Of these five, Miskovic is returning from the 2013-14 IceHogs team and Wise, a 23-year-old left winger who most recently signed, appeared in all three games of the rookie tournament with the Blackhawks.

There are 9 camp invitees including four defensemen and five forwards. Nick Bruneteau, Brett Kostolansky, Paul Swindlehurst and Ildar Teyakov are the defensemen and Garrett Klotz, Brett Perlini and Klarc Wilson; all under contract with the Indy Fuel, Rockford’s ECHL affiliate, along with Scott Brannon and Winston Day Chief are the forwards.

I personally would like to see Teuvo, Morin and Danault as a first line with Broadhurst, Mashinter and LeBlanc or McNeill together in another line. These guys have experience in the NHL together and are hungry for their call up. We’ll see a great show as they compete against each other while playing for the IceHogs. It appears there is a stronger defensive presence than offensive, so strategic coaching will be interesting. There are two defenseman 6’9” and 210 plus pounds in Teyakov and Svedberg that will be hard to miss. I have a feeling Jeremy Morin will be with the Blackhawks more often than not. Not to forget the goaltenders, Simpson and Carruth both having a 6’3” frame between the posts with great stats.

Training Camp starts Sunday with practices everyday through Wednesday, October 1. Thursday, October 2 there’s a pregame skate and a Preseason Game vs. the Chicago Wolves in Rockford and another Preseason Game vs. Milwaukee Admirals in Milwaukee on Friday, October 3. Saturday, October 11 is the Regular Season Home Opener vs. the Milwaukee Admirals at the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford at 7:00 p.m.
