The Blackhawks treated the game against the Canadiens as a dress rehearsal for the regular season opener as MOST starters placed tonight. Niklas Hjalmarsson, Marian Hossa, and Teuvo Teravainen did not play in tonight’s game. Kris Versteeg joined the Blackhawks for the first time this preseason after being recently ill. Antti Raanta got the start in net tonight. Prospects Trevor Van Riemsdyk and Kyle Cumiskey played on defense tonight. Van Riemsdyk has a chance of making the Blackhawks out of training camp.

The Blackhawks outshot the Canadiens for the two periods but could not find the back of the net. The score was knotted at zero for two periods. Once the third period started the Canadiens unleashed their offensive surge. Rene Bourgue scored early in the third period. Less than two minutes later the Canadiens beat Raanta again. Nathan Beaulieu scored the second goal of the game. Andrew Shaw cut the Canadiens lead in half late in the third period. The Shaw goal however did not add enough fuel to the Blackhawks fire. Michael Bournival hit an empty goal to seal the victory for the Canadiens. The Blackhawks fell 3-1 to the Candiens.

News and Notes:

  • The Blackhawks have not scored on the power play this entire preseason.
  • Brandon Mashinter played 8:11 in the enforcer role and played sparingly in the third period.

The Blackhawks conclude the preseason on Friday against the New York Rangers.
