The Blackhawks have to get salary cap compliant by the middle of the week with them sitting just over 2 million dollars over the cap, and all signs are pointing to Nick Leddy being the player sacrificed at the plate of the salary cap.
What signs are pointing to Leddy being the player traded? First, Bob McKenzie said that the Hawks were trying to trade Leddy all summer long, Secondly, there were reports out today that there are 7 teams that are interested in trading for the rights to Nick Leddy, thirdly Leddy didn’t play but in two of the 6 preseason games in the last two weeks including traveling but sitting at Madison Square Garden, and finally when asked after the Blackhawks 3-2 Shootout loss Joel Quenneville gave his personal kiss of death when he said “We Will See” if Leddy starts the season in Chicago.
Nick Leddy of course is a young defenseman with a Stanley Cup Championship and there is absolutely no reason the Hawks should be parting ways with the Blackhawks. Leddy may never be a #1 defensive pairing player but he has great speed and an offensive game from the blue line that will be missed much more down the line than one would expect in Blackhawk land.
If the Hawks are trading a defenseman it should be Michal Rozsival, Johnny Oduya and then Leddy in that order, but the problem is Rozsival and Oduya are banged up and have a limited no trade clause and well they are veterans unlike the youthful Leddy.
All signs are pointing to a Leddy trade. What do you think will Stan Bowman pull that trigger or will he make a decision like he did with Niklas Hjalmarsson and go in a different direction?
